"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is,
because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't
be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?"
The Cheshire Cat
"The first question I ask myself when something doesn't seem to be beautiful is why do I think it's not beautiful. And very shortly you discover that there is no reason."
John Cage
Maoya Bassiouni was born in Switzerland 1986. She has 3 nationalities: Swiss, American and Egyptian. She has been studying environmental engineering at the Polytechnic School in Lausanne (EPFL) since
2005.
I discovered the miraculous world of photography at the age of six with my father. He brought me every Saturday to the black and white lab where he used to work. I spent hours there destroying films and wasting paper.
Today, I am experimenting. I play with everyday lines and shapes. I do not look for sense or emotion in my subjects. I want my photographs to be free to simply exist as lines and figures detached from what they represent. I hope not to guide individuals that contemplate theses photographs towards a predefined emotion, nor share my likes and dislikes but rather invite them to forget what they know to discover and imagine again.
Maoya provides stock images for Farmboy Fine Arts, a design agency based in Vancouver, Canada.
Maoya photographs concerts and bands for:
- Le Romandie rock club in Lausanne.
- Balelec festival 2008 at the EPFL
- For Noise Festival 2008 in Pully
- Berles Rock Festival 2008 in Denens
